Ultrasound produces sound waves by rapidly oscillating
the head hand piece probe. Altering the frequency of the
oscillations, controls the depth of penetration. The
lower the frequency, the greater the depth of
penetration.
The American
Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery recently stated:
"New skin care product formulations, used in conjunction
with ULTRASOUND, will allow for deeper penetration of
topically applied rejuvenating agents into the skin,
resulting in significantly improved aesthetic results."

AESTHETIC BENEFITS
The treatment has three major effects: John Laszlo, M.D.
writes of three major effects in Skin Inc. December
2000.
-
Mechanical
effects:
The mechanical effects include micro-massage of
tissue, softening of scars, increased superficial
toning, and increased elasticity of the skin.
-
Thermal effects:
The thermal effects of ultrasound create friction
and increase local heat. By increasing the
metabolism of fibroblasts and other connective
tissue cells, production of collagen and elastin
increases. Increased temperature also stimulates
blood flow to the area, bringing with it more oxygen
and nutrients for healing. Another benefit of
increased blood flow is an increase in lymph flow,
which aids in removing toxins and waste products.
-
Chemicals
Effects:
Ultrasound helps
increase the rate of chemical reactions in cells to
facilitate healing. It also decreases the local pH
and increases the permeability of skin
cells--effects that favor the penetration of active
ingredients in the epidermis.
Therapeutic
ultrasound treatments hydrate the skin and allow product
to penetrate deeper into the skin, leaving your skin
feeling smoother and rejuvenated.

"Early controlled studies suggest that
externally-applied ultrasound can result in
significant clinical skin rejuvenation
benefits." Aesthetic Surgery Journal
article's author David H. McDaniel, M.D. |
Ultrasound
waves cannot be transmitted through the air and need
some sort of liquid medium for it to pass through. For
this reason a gel is applied between the ultrasound hand
piece probe and the surface of the skin.
